Tips For Solving Winter Woes in Your Ferrysburg Home

Living in Michigan can bring extra headaches for homeowners in the winter months. The following are some issues that may arise and tips for solving them.
- Window Frost - when your windows are exposed to moist air inside your home and cold air outside, frost forms on them. It can be beautiful but damaging. Finding the right balance of heat and humidity is key. If you still have single-paned windows you may want to think about replacing them with double-paned.
- Ice Dams - these occur when heat rises in a house with poor insulation. The heat melts the snow on the roof, then refreezes in the unheated eaves. This happening repeatedly forms a dam along the eaves forcing more water to back up under the shingles leaking into your home potentially causing damage both inside and outside. Ventilation and proper insulation are key to preventing ice dams.
- Icicles - although very pretty, icicles can be dangerous. They form when sunlight or another heat source causes rooftop snow to melt, then refreezing at the edge of the roof. If your house has icicles the problem is your attic. You will need to properly seal, ventilate, and insulate your attic.
- Freezing Pipes - in the cold winter water expands when it freezes. Any water sitting in your pipes runs the risk of causing a fracture or a complete burst. Maintaining your home at a safe temperature, between 55 and 60 degrees, and properly winterizing outside will help to avoid a major disaster. Just in case, make sure to know where your main water shutoff is!
