The holidays are right around the corner, and that means that you are probably starting to put up some decorations. Although making your house look colorful and festive is fun, it comes along with its own set of dangers. Here are some ways to protect your family and home this holiday season:
- Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use. Any damage can easily result in serious shock or fire.
- Do not overload electrical outlets. Also, do not plug high-wattage appliances into power strips.
- Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights. More than that could blow a fuse and possible cause a fire.
- Water your tree daily. Dry trees are a serious fire hazard.
- Keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources. A heat source too close to a decoration factor in half of home fires that began with decorations according to the NFPA.
- Protect cords from damage.
- Check decorations for certification label.
- Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Unattended cooking equipment is the leading cause of home cooking fires according to the NFPA.
- Turn off, unplug, and extinguish all decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house.
