Preventing Frozen Pipes

Winter is approaching and that means that the possibility of experiencing a frozen pipe is on the rise. Each year, many homeowners in West Michigan fall victim to frozen pipes resulting in extensive water damage. The pipes that are the most at risk are those in unheated interior spaces such as basements, attics, and garages. Depending on how cold it gets, all pipes can be at risk of freezing. Here are some great tips to prevent frozen pipes:
- Purchase and apply pipe insulation.
- Open cabinets to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
- Let faucets drip. Running water helps prevent pipes from freezing.
- Keep the heat on at all times.
- Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
If you go away on a winter vacation, be sure to have somebody check in on your home regularly. A pipe break can happen at any moment and the longer it sits, the more damage is done. If you do experience a frozen pipe and do not know where it is or are unable to thaw it, call a licensed plumber.
